Setting tax by channel

Hello,

I need some help configuring the tax section.  Here is what I want to do:

- I have 2 product channels - one which contains products which do not need to be taxed, and another which contains products which are taxable.
- I want the tax to be calculated by province/state only for the channel which contains taxable products.
- I also want all shipping to be taxed regardless of which items are in the cart.

I have tried using the no_tax=“yes” for the products which I do not want taxed, however this results in shipping not being taxed either, even though I have made shipping taxable in the settings.

Do I need to create a custom tax plugin for this?  If there was a way to set taxes by channel, or perhaps even category, that might be helpful as it would do away with the necessity to use the no_tax=“yes” parameter, which seems to cause shipping to not be taxed.

In another shopping cart program I used to use, I was able to specify whether or not a product was taxable right in the product details section, ie the channel entry, and tax would only be calculated for those products which were specified as taxable.  Is this possible with CT?

Thanks for any help!

Yes… the example templates have it this way, but it’s basically just something that turns on and off no_tax parameter.

however this results in shipping not being taxed either, even though I have made shipping taxable in the settings.

What shipping method are you using?

Unfortunately we’ve had a bad month with it, but we do not forsee that we will have any continued problems with support through our portal going forward, or on forums while we’re still transitioning. We will send out a newsletter and make additional notifications through twitter and other outlets over the coming weeks.

Moving forward; things returning to normal.

I am using the flat rate shipping method.

After doing some testing I have found that there needs to be at least 1 item in the cart which is taxable in order for the shipping to get taxed.  If I only have non-taxable items in the cart, tax never gets applied to shipping.  Every time I add a taxable item to the cart, the tax also gets applied to shipping, and when I remove the taxable item, shipping does not get taxed…

Is there an easy fix for this?

No. If there was… I’d fix it. That said though, I recently made a similar fix for tax & discounts (though a bit in reverse). I’ll add it to my calendar. I have it scheduled for Wednesday at 10AM for a review. Please post back then, and we’ll see where it’s at.

We have a version we’ll release on Thursday of this week that has a fix for this.
