NOTE: If you have a problem with PayPal: UPGRADE TO CARTTHROB VERSION 430+.
CartThrob was not originally built to suit PayPal’s specific workflow. That created a lot of problems. HOWEVER, CartThrob has been rewritten to support PayPal’s workflow and now requires very little effort to set up to work with PayPal Standard. Since the current information in this forum is generally moot, and we don’t foresee ongoing problems with PayPal specifically, we are setting this forum to “read-only” mode and will eventually delete it altogether.
With versions of CartThrob from 430+ PayPal now has much more robust support, and now features its own notification system for both customer and admin in the PayPal settings to help you and your customer track the process of PayPal’s payment processing notifications.
Things to take note of. CartThrob uses PayPal’s IPN notification system to manage the order completion process. The PayPal IPN may instantly notify the system of a complete transaction, or may take up to one week. Until PayPal has notified the system that the order is authorized/complete, PayPal’s payment is not guaranteed and it is not safe to ship any goods or allow any downloads. When PayPal IPN updates your site, any notifications tied to that type of IPN update will be sent out, and entry statuses for that order will be changed accordingly based on your configured settings. You can use these status changes and notifications to inform you and your customers of their order status, and provide any relevant instructions.
The IPN will initiate CartThrob’s processing of coupons and inventory when an authorized/complete IPN notification is received. Since this may happen several days after a transaction is initiated, we strongly advise to use an alternate payment method if inventory management is critical.
