CartThrob 2 Beta is Go

Though we try not to pester, we do send e-newsletters. Please see the unsubscribe link at the bottom if you really don’t remember signing up for this!

We have much to tell about CartThrob2 and the upgrade process. Please read along. 1. CartThrob2 (beta) Launches. 2. IT’S NOT AN UPGRADE YET! 3. New features! 4. More about upgrades. 5. Please don’t click unsubscribe!

CartThrob 2 Is Available Now!

CartThrob2 (beta) for ExpressionEngine 2.13 is available for purchase now at CartThrob.com. Technically this is a "soft launch" while CartThrob2 is being beta tested, so for you adventurous, early-adopter types, this means that you can start building new EEcommerce sites right now! If you actually value stability, or are planning to upgrade an existing CartThrob 1.x site, for the love of all that is holy please wait to purchase until May 16 by which time we will release a  "stable" version and a migration tool.

Not Your Upgrade

I just wanted to explain what’s going on a bit to avoid frustration or confusion. 1. Yes, CartThrob2 (beta) works on EE2. 2. Yes It’s available for sale (beta testers are much more committed when there is money on the line). 3. HOWEVER, it’s a BETA program... which means buy using it, you will be helping us test what may be a bit unstable at the present time, and we don’t consider it a final product. New Stores: buy now. Upgraders: wait til May 16th!

To successfully upgrade, CartThrob 1 users will require a migration tool due to the way that EE’s configured. This tool is not complete. When it is complete, and we’ve had a little more feedback, then we will release a production (final) version of CartThrob2. At which point we will honor all of our upgrade promises (free or discounted upgrades, more on that later.) The final release will be available on May 16.

We’ve already had lots of requests to convert a CartThrob1 license to a CartThrob2(beta) license. It’s not yet time for that. On May 16, we will release the final version of CartThrob2, at which point we will make announcements about the upgrade. We’re not trying to make things difficult, but the fact is that 1. you should not upgrade existing CT1 sites to CT2 sites until we’ve had time to test with a wider group of testers, 2. we’re not prepared to field a large number of support requests for upgrade problems at the present time, 3. we’re primarily interested in refining CartThrob2 so that by the time it’s ready, everything is fairly painless for our existing customers, 4. it takes a lot of time to manually convert an existing account from one license type to another... right now we need to focus on bug fixing, so please bear with us.

Upgrade Notes

If you purchased CartThrob1 before 7-10-2010:

On May 16th we will send you a link where you can pay a $49.99 upgrade fee for each CartThrob1 license. Upgraded licenses will then have access the CartThrob2 files and no longer have access to CartThrob1 distributions. IT’S AN UPGRADE!!!

If you purchased CartThrob1 between 7-10-2010 and 3-13-2011

On May 16, we will send you a link where you can convert your CartThrob1 liense to a CartThrob2 license. Upgraded accounts will no longer have access to CartThrob1 codebase.

If you purchased CartThrob1 between 2-10-2011  and 3-13-2011

You can request an immediate upgrade to CartThrob2 (beta). You will no longer have access to the CartThrob1 codebase.

If you purchased CartThrob2 (beta)

This is the same as a CartThrob2 (final) license. May 16th... you’ll be ready already. And no, you don’t also get access to CartThrob1. grin

CartThrob1 and CartThrob2 are different products.

A license to one is not a license to both. So that we can afford to offer amazing customer support, you will have to choose whether you want access to ongoing CartThrob1 codebase or access to CartThrob2.

Man! I never meant to make this complicated. I also never expected it to take almost a year to port CartThrob to EE2. It’s here now, and we’re happy with it. We hope you will be too. Hopefully... we’ll have more time for documentation, marketing, and announce all of this upgrade stuff well in advance of anyone asking about it!

End Credits

I know you’re reading this end bit, and so now I’m embarrassed for both of us. You’re a self-respecting web professional right? You should be out buying up PixelAndTonic add-ons... not reading thist stuff. And certainly not eyeing my unsubscribe link. I’m desparate for friends, please don’t leave me.
